Chris Kenneally of CCC Interviews Steve Piersanti

In his keynote address to the 2013 PubWest conference on Friday in Santa Fe, Piersanti detailed how Berrett-Koehler Publishers has succeeded by innovating in every area of its business – from company ownership and editorial practices, to book design and employee compensation practices. He urged the gathering of independent publishers to follow that example.

In this 34-minute interview, PubWest member and panel moderator Chris Kenneally of the Copyright Clearance Center discusses innovation in publishing with Steve Piersanti of Berrett-Koehler, a PubWest member publisher. Edwards Brothers Malloy Acquires Ricoh Infoprint 5000 Inkjet Press

Ann Arbor, MI (October 22, 2013)—Edwards Brothers Malloy announced that it has acquired a Ricoh InfoPrint 5000 continuous form inkjet press for its Ann Arbor, Michigan digital print center.  The press will be installed in October, with full production planned for November. Capable of running one to four color text, the press promises significant speed and price advantages over traditional short run offset and digital toner printing.

“We’re very pleased to be able to offer customers another option for short-run printing,” said John Edwards, President and CEO of Edwards Brothers Malloy.  “It really is a versatile piece of equipment.  We can now fill a niche for higher run, faster manufacturing with quality that rivals our premium toner printers and offset sheetfed presses.  It’s ideal for random and full four-color printing.”

The press will handle print runs ranging from 1-1,500 copies and page counts up to 1,100-1,200 pages, depending on paper bulk.  A variety of paper options, including coated stock, and softcover and hardcover bind styles will also be offered.

Edwards noted that the company has invested significantly in its digital manufacturing operation in the last year, adding new staff and upgrading its existing fleet with the installation of new Océ, Konica Minolta, and HP presses as well as new case-making, bindery, trimmer, and lamination equipment.  The company also expanded its Print Local℠ service to its Oxnard, California print center and took over an in-house digital print center for Pearson.  The moves are part of a multi-year plan to cement the company’s lead in short-run book and journal manufacturing.

University of Nevada Press Wins 2013 AASLH Award of Merit

(Nashville, TN) August 1, 2013—The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) proudly announces that the University of Nevada Press is the recipient of an Award of Merit from the AASLH Leadership in History Awards for the publication of The Gold Rush Letters of E. Allen Grosh and Hosea B. Grosh. The AASLH Leadership in History Awards, now in its 68th year, is the nation’s most prestigious recognition of achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.

Never before published, the Grosh brothers’ letters are among the most historically significant documents of the Gold Rush era. Ethan and Hosea Grosh, bright and energetic young men, left Pennsylvania in 1849 to join the California Gold Rush. Their search for wealth took them by land and sail to San Francisco, to mining country in the Sierra foothills, and finally into Nevada’s Gold Canyon, where they discovered deposits of silver ore shortly before their untimely deaths in 1857. The original letters—disintegrating, scorched by fire, and nearly illegible—were preserved by the family, partly as evidence for lawsuits claiming a share of the Comstock wealth. The Nevada Historical Society purchased the manuscript collection in 2007. Editors Ronald James and Robert Stewart spent four years transcribing and annotating the letters, tracking down obscure reference, and providing important supporting material in their introductions and appendixes. Ronald James recently retired as the Nevada state historic preservation officer, and Robert Stewart is a well-known Nevada historian. Publication was assisted by a grant from Nevada Humanities.

This year, AASLH is proud to confer eighty-eight national awards honoring people, projects, exhibits, books, and organizations. The winners represent the best in the field and provide leadership for the future of state and local history. Presentation of the awards will be made at a special banquet during the 2013 AASLH Annual Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday, September 20. Robert Stewart will attend to accept the award.

The AASLH awards program was initiated in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States.

Edwards Brothers Malloy to Consolidate Ann Arbor Facilities, and Invest in Digital Growth

Ann Arbor, MI (July 30, 2013)—In an effort to reduce excess offset manufacturing capacity and to free up resources to invest in digital manufacturing, Edwards Brothers Malloy announced today that it is consolidating its two Ann Arbor, Michigan manufacturing plants, located 7 miles apart, into one facility. The State Street plant offset operation will be moved to the company’s other offset facility located on Jackson Road in Ann Arbor, with some equipment also being moved to its facility in Lillington, North Carolina. The State Street property will be put on the market. The move is expected to take 6-12 months, with some positions being closed now. Additional positions may be identified for closure as the consolidation progresses over the next year.

“It’s a very difficult decision to make,” said John Edwards, President and CEO of Edwards Brothers Malloy.  “My grandfather built the State Street plant and many of our employees have family members working here—I’ve known and worked with many of them my whole life. But like most book printers, we’ve seen a decline in longer run offset business. At the same time our digital operation is growing at a 20% clip, so that is where we need to be investing for the future. Having two large offset facilities this close together that are not fully utilized just doesn’t make sense and we need to redirect resources to the side of the business that is growing.”

Edwards noted that the company has invested significantly in its digital manufacturing operation in the last year, including the addition of a new inkjet press which will be installed in Ann Arbor in the next 6-8 weeks. Edwards Brothers Malloy also took over the operation of an in-house digital print center for a publishing client in New Jersey earlier this year and will incorporate those operations into its digital facilities by October 1st. Other recent investments include creating an expanded digital print hub for its Print Local℠ program in Oxnard, California, upgrading presses in most of its 9 digital print centers, the upgrading of EDI capabilities for its print-on-demand and gps Global Print Solutions™ programs, and a new customer web portal for handling online transactions, due out in 2014.

“This is part of a multi-year plan to position us for the future,” said Edwards. “We’re celebrating our 120 year anniversary this year.  With hard work and a bit of luck, we plan to be around for the next 120 years.”

Happy 15th Anniversary ForeWord Reviews!

ForeWord Reviews, a literary review journal celebrating its fifteenth year reviewing independently published books, is helping a growing number of consumers discover great works by small presses. Bang Printing to Acquire Hess Print Solutions.



Brimfield, OH, May 22, 2013 – Hess Print Solutions and its subsidiaries (HPS), a provider of accountable print performance solutions and other value-added services for catalogs, books, publications and educational printed products, announced today that HPS has entered into an agreement to sell substantially all of its assets to an affiliate of Bang Printing.

The decision to sell to Bang Printing followed an extensive process of reviewing various strategic opportunities for HPS that was aimed at ensuring it will remain a viable long-term business partner for customers, vendors and employees. This sale will allow HPS and Bang Printing to combine their existing capabilities and provide customers with a more diversified suite of products and services.

“The strategic decision to pursue a financial restructuring through a sale will allow us to proactively and quickly improve our financial position and ensure we have the resources to meet the needs of our clients, suppliers, employees and other business partners going forward” said Jerry Haywood, interim CEO of HPS.

To facilitate the sale of assets, HPS has commenced a prepackaged voluntary Chapter 11 proceeding in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. HPS has obtained debtor-in-possession financing with certain of its existing secured lenders, which, along with the company’s cash flow, is expected to provide the working capital necessary to meet its ongoing obligations while the company pursues approval of the sale.

HPS has filed a number of motions with the Court requesting authority to keep the business operating as usual. The immediate relief being requested includes a request to pay all wages, salaries and commissions, as well as honor the employee benefits programs, and to continue existing customer programs.

After the sale is approved by the Bankruptcy Court and consummated, HPS will work with the purchaser to address the structure of the combined organization, with the primary objective to continue to provide superior product, service and technology offerings in a cost-effective way.

Ware-Pak Still Adapting After 50 Years

Chicago, Illinois –  If the Chicago-based fulfillment and distribution company were going to select a famous quote to characterize its 50 years of service to book publishers and associations, it would certainly have to give serious consideration to the phrase “the only thing constant in life is change.”

When founder Robert Plechaty’s employer, Cuneo Press, asked if he would use a corner of their printing facility to accommodate their fulfillment service in 1963, little did they know that Ware-Pak would still be responding to changing needs 50 years later. “Adapting to industry changes has become a way of life for every member of the Ware-Pak team,” stated Keith Shay, President and CEO of Ware-Pak. “Their focus and dedication and the loyal support of our customers have made Ware-Pak the company it is today.”
